Oops, Not Again? Kane County Cougars at Burlington Bees
April 6th, 2002
Community Field, Burlington, Iowa

This Is Going To Be A Long Year Folks.

If the Cougars keep giving games away in the late innings, this is just going to be another long year. The team needs to learn how to hit, with runners on base, besides the homers, every so often.

Dontrelle Willis, the pitcher the Marlins got in the Alfonseca deal made his first Marlins start. He pitched four innings, giving up five hits and three runs. He walked one and struck out two. He struggled from the get go, givng up a single to lead off the first inning, then balking him home later in the inning. More on that later.

Jason Kahi Kaanoi started for the Bees, he went six innings and gave up only two hits. Jason walked one and struck out five. He retired the first five in a row.

Tyler Banks pitched two innings, giving up nothing, plus striking out four. He allowed one hard hit out. Tim Schilling then came in and pitch an inning, He got three straight line outs to center. Kevin Cave was the fifth pitcher of the night for the Cougars, he went one inning, and gave up two hits. Getting one double play.

Lou Evans was the fourth pitcher and he lasted three hitters. giving up one hits and two runs.

The scoring started in the bottom of the first when the Bees, had James Shanks lead off the inning with a single to left, he then stole second. Brett Groves, grounded to first, to move Shanks to third. Anibal Figueroa walked. After that Willis got a little antsy and balked home Shanks.

The Bees added to that score in the third when with two outs, after a double play. Anibal Figueroa hit a long homer oer everything to straight away centerfield.

Tony Arnerich lead off the fourth inning with a single to center, he then moved on to second on a wild pitch. Arnerich then moved to third on a grounder back to the pitcher. John Draper then lined one past Michael Tucker at third for a single. With Jonathan Guzman up, Willis would uncork a wild pitch to allow Arnerich to score from third.

The Cougars would finaly! claw a run on the board in the sixth when with one out, George Arnott hit a homer to left center field.

After scoring one run the prevous inning they would score again in the eigth. With one two outs, Kris Clute then walked. Anthony Brewer then hit a homer to left field. William Arroyo then walked. The Bees would then make a pitching change. Arnott would great the new pitcher by lining one off of the glove of the first baseman, the ball would bounce around in the rightfield corner to allow Arnott to get a triple. On the play Arroyo would score. Arnott then would score on a wild pitch.

The Cougars would then fall apart in the bottom of the inning after they had rallied to get a two run lead the half inning before. James Shanks lead off the inning with a walk. Brett Groves then singled to left. Both of them moved up on a wild pitch. Anibal Figueroa then reached on an error by shortstop Arroyo. On the play Shanks would score. The error was a horrible throw that bounced off of the stands. The Cougars then brought in Cave to pitch. Galindo Gomez then singled to right. On the play both Groves and Figueroa would score.

Notes-Anthony Brewer made several great catches in center, he looks like he can really go and get the ball. Oh by the way I will finally have pics of the new Cougars up on the website either, Sunday or Monday

Well let's see, my time in Burlington is thankfully over with, if you go to Burlington make sure you get the burrito in a bag its good, and stay away from the hotdogs and pizza.
Thanks
