4 Hits Will Not Win A Game

The Cougars got out hit and out played in the field today, as they now drop three games below the 500 mark for the season. It is kind of a bad day when the highlight of the game is in the ninth inning, when one of your players hits a long homer, and it's what the ump does that makes it the highlight.

Shawn Hill pitched a good game for the Lumberkings, he went five innings, and gave up only two hits. He did give up one run, but it was unearned. He walked one and struck out six. Hill retired six of the first seven Cougars he faced. The one he did not retire walked to lead off the second. He ended his outing by retiring the final five.

The relievers for the Lumberkings came in and just shut the door. Jason Walked pitched the next two innings and walked one and struck out one.

Phil Akens made his third start for the Cougars. All three have been on the road. He pitched into the fifth inning. He just did not have much today. Phil gave nine hits and seven runs. Six of those runs were earned.

Tyler Banks did a good job out of the pen, he went two and one thirds innings, giving up only one hit. He walked three and struck out three. He got a double play in the seventh inning to get out of a first and third with two outs situation. Lou Evans did not fare much better. He pitched one inning. An error by shortstop Rex Rundgren did him in. He gave up three runs in the inning. He only gave up one hit.

The scoring began in the bottom of the first when Danny Rombley singled to right. Greg Thissen then grounded to third to move Rombley over. John Labanderia then drove home Rombley from second with a single to center.

The Kings added another in the second when with one out. Shawn Norris walked. David Lutz then doubled to right. Craig Kerner hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Norris.

The Cougars did put up a little bit of a fight in this game, in the third inning, Kris Clute would reach on an error by the second baseman Greg Thissen. Rex Rundgren then popped out to the shortstop. Anthony Brewer doubled to right to score Clute to cut the Kings lead in half.

In the fifth the Kings exploded with five runs. David Lutz led things off with a single to right. Rightfielder Charles Frazier missed the ball and let it go to the fence for an error. Lutz would get to second. Craig Kerner then put down a sacrifice bunt to move Lutz to third. Danny Rombley doubled to left to score Lutz. Greg Thissen then singled to left to score Rombley. A wild pitch would move Thissen to second. Josh Labanderia then lined to left. Dominick Ambrosini doubled to left to score Thissen. Clyde Williams hit a homer to right to score Ambrosini. Matt Brown then singled to left. The Cougars made a pitching change and brought in Tyler Banks. Banks got Shawn Norris to groundout to second to end the nightmare inning.

Clinton put the game out of reach in the eighth with three more runs, this time off Cougars reliever Lou Evans. David Lutz led off with a walk. Craig Kerner then walked also. Danny Rombley lined on off of the right leg of Evans for a single. Anthony Ambrosini then reached from an error by shortstop Rex Rundgren. On the play Lutz would score. Josh Lababderia then struck out. Dominick Ambrosini then walked with the bases loaded. Kerner then came home on the play. Clyde Williams hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Rombley.

The highlight of the game came in the ninth for the Cougars when Jason Stokes hit a long homer to left field. On the play the home plate ump got up after Stokes hit the ball took one step on the grass and fell on his back, he signaled the homerun while still on the back, I guess he found a wet spot on the grass.
