Cedar Rapids Kernels at Kane County Cougars
Tuesday, April 23rd, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios

The Cougars offense is in hibernation. They had four hits after having two days off. Coming into the game the Cougars were hitting .225 as a team, that is near the bottom of the league.

Jake Woods started for the Kernels and pitched great. He went six innings, giving up only three hits, and walking one. Jake reitred the first four men he faced. The Cougars never got anyone past second base against him. Woods also struck out four.

The Kernels bullpen was even stronger than their starter. Dustin Griffith came in and pitched two perfect innings, striking out four. Mark O'Sullivan then pitched the ninth and gav eup only a leadoff double to Hunter Wyant.

Allen Baxter made his first home start and his third overall. The number three pick for the Marlins in last years draft lasted five innings for the second straight outing. This time he pitched better than last but still lost. He gave up three his and two runs. Only one of those runs were earned. He walked three and struck out six. Baxter threw two wild pitches.

The bullpen got lit up this time. Nick Ungs came on to replace Baxter in the sixth. He lasted two innings, giving up six hits. He allowed five runs and two walks. In the seventh inning ten Kernels came to the plate to face him. In that inning alone he walked two. Tyler Banks then came on for the last two innings. He wasn't that much better than Ungs. He gave up three hits and two runs. He did strikeout three. He also had a good ninth inning. In that inning he struck out the leadoff man, Ed Welch. Greg Porter than flew out to Anthony Brewer in center. Ryan Nevins then struck out to end the inning.

At the plate for the Kernels their leadoff man got on base four of the five times he came to the plate. Ransel Melgarejo walked twice, singled once and reache don an error, he scored twice. Justin Turner was batting second. He scored twice. Jeff Mathis had three runs batted in. Casey Kotchman doubled and had two runs batted in.

The scoring started in the top of the first for the Kernels when Ransel Melgarejo lead things off with a walk. Allex Baxter tried to pick him off of first base and threw the ball into the Cougars bullpen down the right field line. Melgarejo would end up at second on the play, he then made it to third on a wild pitch. Justin Turner struck out. Jeff Mathis grounded to short, on the play Melgarejo would score to give the Kernels the lead.

In the fourth the Kernels added another run whe with one out Dallas McPherson singled to second. He then stole second and third. Ed Welch then struck out. Greg Porter singled to left to score McPherson.

The Kernels exploded for five runs in the seventh off of reliever Nick Ungs. The inning started when Ryan Nevins singled to center. Jon Cahill then blooped one in short right. Rightfielder Charles Frazier would've had the ball if second baseman William Arroyo did not run into him, or just get in the way. One out later, Justin Turner walked to load the bases. Jeff Mathis then lined one to center. Centerfielder Anthony Brewer lost it in the lights. The ball droped and it rolled past him. On the play Nevins and Cahill would score. Casey Kotchman then singled to right to score Turner. Dallas McPherson walked. Ed Welch hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Mathis. Greg Porter then singeld to center to score Kotchman.

In the eighth inning the Kernels added two more runs when, with one out Ransel Melgarejo singled to center. Justin Turner then doubled to center to score Melgarejo. Jeff Mathis struck out. Casey Kotchman doubled to center to score Turner.
